Kiev Pecherska Lavra is also know as a Kiev Monastery of Caves. It's an Old Orthodox Christian Monastery on the territory of Ukraine. Since the beginning of 1050 it was a caves for prays of monks. So later it became the center of Orthodox Christians in Eastern Europe. Together with St. Sophia Cathedral it is inscribed to the UNESCO Word Heritage Site. It was named as one of seven Wonders of Ukraine in 2007.
Pecherska Lavra Monastery was founded in the eleventh century and has been built during the next nine centuries.
The name "Pecherska" comes from Ukrainian word "pechera" (means cave), which were found in this area and in which the first monks settled.
Lavra - that honorable title, which was given to a very large and important (male) monasteries. Therefore the name of the monastery is also translated as Kiev Cave Monastery.
Just to mention Pechersk Lavra is the largest Orthodox shrine in the world throughout the Christian world, second is only the Vatican. The architectural complex of the monastery today produces a tremendous impression.
Most of the constructions of the Monastery dates back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and are an excellent example of Ukrainian Baroque style of architecture. Kiev-Pechersk Lavra began its existence in 1051.
